Some Negative Vitamin Deficiency Symptoms.

By hanneysmith at 2010-03-16 02:47:32
In the 21st century, in one of the most developed nations in the world, we have a vitamin deficiency of epidemic proportions. How is this possible, you may ask. We are extremely well fed, many of us take multi-vitamins, we drink our milk and eat our vegetables (most of the time). Furthermore, the US government has recommended daily allowances for vitamins that many of us try to get every day. How could we possibly be deficient in a vitamin? How did we get so deficient? There are few dietary sources of vitamin D, including cod liver oil, egg yolks, butter, liver, oily fish, some fortified breakfast cereals, and milk. We tend to avoid strongly-flavored fishy foods in this culture, and we tend to minimize consumption of eggs and butter to lower our cholesterol. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin from cholesterol, and requires Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation for its synthesis. With the increased use of high SPF sunscreens (which completely block UVB radiation) and the increased use of cholesterol-lowering medication, we have severely limited our ability to manufacture vitamin D. Even without sunscreen, most of the US is far enough north of the equator that we receive limited amounts of UVB during most of the year. It is virtually impossible to get enough UVB to make vitamin D during the winter if you are north of the 35th parallel (think Atlanta or San Diego).

Our bodies are designed to work for the best of us given that we provide with all the necessary components they need. Maintaining good vitamin levels, will ensure we stay healthy and energized; it is important that we avoid vitamin deficiency; low levels of vitamins will start producing signs and symptoms and if there is a severe deficiency we can experience serious diseases.A great way to avoid vitamin deficiency is through a good diet and ingesting vitamin supplements. These supplements are not expensive and serve us to complement any lack we have on our diet. In severe cases doctors will recommend stronger supplements provided via injections.A lack of vitamin B9, B12 and E can cause various types of anemia to develop. A vitamin B9 deficiency can cause macrocytic anemia (a condition where your body produces fewer, larger red blood cells). Not getting enough vitamin B12 can lead to pernicious anemia (a type of anemia that has similar characteristics to macrocytic anemia). A lack of vitamin E causes hemolytic anemia (a condition where your blood cells become very delicate and are destroyed faster than your body can produce them).

A vitamin A deficiency can cause damage to your eyes which ultimately leads to problems with your vision. In most cases night blindness (a condition that makes it very difficult to see in dim light) is the first symptom of vitamin A deficiency. However, if left untreated night blindness can develop into full blindness. To avoid this you need to make sure you are consuming enough of each of the thirteen vitamins. Take a look at your current diet and see which vitamins you are not consuming enough of. Then address the balance by incorporating some new foods into your diet. This will ensure that you avoid all the negative vitamin deficiency symptoms discussed this article whilst enjoying the full benefits that the thirteen vitamins can provide.
